Research was conducted using data from Revelio Labs, a workforce intelligence company, to find out the company-level attrition rate (attrition is when an employee is lost due to quitting, retiring or being laid-off) of the Culture 500. The Culture 500 is a sample of large, for profit companies that collectively employ about a third of the private sector-workforce in the United States. The review was on the Great Resignation of 2021 where records show that more than 24 million American employees left their jobs between April 2021 and September 2021. The research was undertaken to understand the Great Resignation and for employers to find ways to hold on to their employees. They discovered five (5) factors that will lead to attrition, or when the employee resigns, retires or gets laid off compared to compensation. Many resign, retire or are laid off due to compensation. These five are the other factors relative to compensation: toxic corporate culture, job insecurity and reorganization, high levels of innovation, failure to recognize employee performance, poor response to COVID-19. From the study: “A toxic culture is 10.4 times more likely to contribute to attrition than compensation.” For job insecurity, it is 3.5 times compared to compensation, 3.2 times for high levels of innovation, failure to recognize employee performance is at 2.9 times compared to compensation and 1.8 times for a poor response to COVID-19. A company that has a toxic culture does not promote diversity in the workplace. There is little or no equality in a toxic workplace. Inclusion is not promoted in a toxic workplace. In a toxic workplace, employees feel disrespected. Also there is unethical behaviour going on in a toxic workplace. The point of the study is that toxic culture is the biggest predictor of employee turnover and for causing employees to resign, retire or get laid off during the Great Resignation.
